Step 3: Movement from Tenure Line to Educator or Research Line

A Tenure-line member of the faculty may request appointment to the Educator or Research line at any time before the individual has exhausted the probationary period and failed to achieve tenure on the tenure line pursuant to the Faculty Handbook. Except in very unusual circumstances, a Tenure-line faculty member who is appointed to the Educator or Research line will likely not be eligible for reappointment to the Tenure line. However, if such a reappointment does occur, the Faculty Handbook’s provisions on how time is counted the tenure probationary period will be followed. Consideration for appointment to an educator or research-line rank will be on the basis of total qualifications.

Requests to move from a tenure line follow the same procedures as if they were initial appointments, with the following being noted:

  • Movement from the Tenure line to the Educator or Research line will result in loss of tenure.
    • Individuals moving from the Tenure line to a non-tenure line will receive the comparable rank that was held on the Tenure-line.
    • Movement to the Educator or Research line will generally not be permitted for promotion of an individual who has failed promotion in the Tenure line if such failure of promotion resulted from lack of evidence of scholarly productivity.
