IMPORTANT: The School of Nursing APT is awaiting final approval for updated SON APT Manuel. Approval is expected in November 2024. Please refer back to the OFAA website regularly for any updates for SON Appointment and Promotion processes.
The below information acts as a guide for the conversation with your Unit Leader and Step 3. The line and rank information is for you explore, but you cannot apply for a faculty appointment or promotion without first speaking and receiving approval from your Unit Leader. If you do not know who your Academic Leader is, please view the Unit Leader and Admin list.

Tenure Line and Grant of Tenure
The Tenure Line and Grant of Tenure recognizes Georgetown University-employed faculty members who make substantial and sustained contributions to the scholarly mission of GUMC in the areas of research, education, service and, as appropriate, patient care.
We also recommend reviewing the Guidelines for Submission of Rank and Tenure Applications by Tenure-Line Faculty approved by the Faculty Senate on February 25, 2021 after Consultation with the University Committee of Rank and Tenure (UCRT) before beginning the application process.

The Committee recognizes that there may be other important contributions that may show similar levels of achievement.
Step 3 (Tenure Line and Grant of Tenure): Discuss with your unit leader and apply for:

Educator Line
The full-time and part-time Educator-line allows for the appointment and promotion of those faculty members who are engaged primarily in the educational mission of the School of Nursing and who have a specialized professional skill set that is instrumental in fulfilling the teaching mission of the School of Nursing. While the defining feature of this track is a requirement for making contributions to education, candidates are expected to contribute to scholarship, service, and research including in some cases, related clinical activities. The educator line can be full time (75 – 100% FTE) or part time (50 – 74% FTE) depending on the needs of the School of Nursing, and are not tenure eligible.

Step 3 (Educator Line): Discuss with your unit leader and apply for:
Research Line
Within certain limitations, full and part-time, non-tenure-line academic appointments carrying the qualification “on the Research-line” is intended to recognize the significant contribution these scholars make to the quality and productivity of the School of Nursing research program. Full-time and part-time employees of the University are eligible for appointment to the Research-line. An individual holding a Research academic title will have primary responsibilities to research programs. However, such an individual will also have responsibilities toward the teaching goals of the School. Faculty on the Research-line will be those salaries, for the most part or in whole, are derived from research grants and or external funds. Whether or not an individual will be appointed in the Research-line will be determined by the nature of future obligations beyond research alone. The research line can be full time (75 – 100% FTE) or part time (50 – 74% FTE) depending on the needs of the School of Nursing, and are not tenure eligible.

Step 3 (Research Line): Discuss with your unit leader and apply for:
Adjunct
Adjunct faculty assist in the teaching mission of the School of Nursing. These faculty members are defined by their percent effort which is less than 50% FTE.
