The below information acts as a guide for the conversation with your Academic Chair and Step 3.  The track and rank information is for you explore, but you cannot apply for a faculty appointment or promotion without first speaking and receiving approval from your Academic Chair.  If you do not know who your academic chair, please see this list of academic chairs.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Onboarding Appointment

If your Clerkship Director or Academic Chair have advised you to begin you standard faculty appointment process with the onboarding appointment, please follow these instructions.

**Please note: Before applying for the onboarding appointment, please speak with your Clerkship Director and Academic Chair to confirm this is the best process for you.**

This process is available to anyone seeking an initial faculty appointment and is primarily intended for those individuals starting immediately in a teaching role. To participate in our Undergraduate Medical Student program individuals must have an offer extended by the respective Academic Chair to work with students.


Clinician Educator

The Clinician Educator Track recognizes faculty who focus primarily on providing clinical care in addition to significant and continuing contributions to the education of Georgetown University students, residents and fellows or others in the medical field and service to GUMC. The defining feature of this track is a contribution to educational activities. Hence the name “Clinician Educator.”

The faculty handbook describes the university standards for research, education, and scholarship. Each department has developed a document outlining how the university standards apply to that discipline. Clinician Scholar 

The Clinician Scholar Track recognizes faculty who make substantial and sustained contributions to the educational, scholarly, service and clinical missions of GUMC. The defining feature of this track is a requirement for scholarship which may take various forms. Hence the name “Clinician Scholar.”

Biomedical Educator

The Biomedical Educator Track recognizes faculty who make important and continuing contributions to the education of Georgetown University students and fellows and to others in the biomedical field in addition to providing service to GUMC.

Biomedical Scholar

The Biomedical Scholar Track recognizes faculty who make substantial and sustained contributions to the educational, research and service missions of GUMC.  It is intended to those scholars who are dedicated to the creation and dissemination of knowledge to their field of study.

Adjunct

The Adjunct Track is used to designate part-time members of the faculty who have the same qualifications as members of the ordinary faculty.

Emeritus/Emerita

A retiree with a record of meritorious service to the University will be awarded an emeritus title by the appropriate Executive Vice President. The emeritus title would consist of the retiree’s pre-retirement title followed by the word ‘Emeritus/Emerita.’

For the purposes of this policy, a retiree is a Georgetown University faculty member or professional librarian who resigns his or her University appointment after satisfying the University’s age and length of service conditions for retirement benefitsPlease note, non-university employed individuals may satisfy these conditions even though they are not eligible for such benefits.

Emeritus/emerita faculty or librarians are eligible for continuation of library privileges and their email accounts. The provision of salaries, facilities, and additional amenities, is subject to the written approval of the relevant administrative officer.

Emeritus/Emerita status does not confer the right to participate in meetings of departments or other faculty governance bodies, or prohibit participation.

Step 3 (Emeritus/Emerita): Discuss with your academic chair and apply:
